21st Century Lab (Plan): Utilising an experimental design process of combining juxtaposing images, the brief was to design a laboratory suitable for the 21st century.  My design combined the images of a vaporator and a group of cells to house a large corporation such as a cosmetics company: the creative, experimental aspects of the business housed in one part of the building, and the more staid, accounting aspects of the business housed in the other.

Bread: A bakery that was to celebrate and put on display the baking process. The form was inspired by the process of rolling the dough to the finished, sliced loaf.

Tank Farm Master Plan (View from Harbour): Tank Farm is an industrial, reclaimed peninsula on Auckland's waterfront, New Zealand. Auckland Regional Council was receiving master plans to redevelop the land to make it into a world class public area. The students' brief (a group exercise) was to develop a master plan for serious consideration of the ARC.

Our group focused strongly on sustainable ideas, bringing through a green belt as the spine of the site, with softer, more sustainable businesses adjacent this spine, and the more industrial & marine industries further out.  The building forms would also transition from the more fluid close to the spine, to more orthogonal toward the outside.

Software used: SketchUp, Photoshop (by another team member)

Digital Effects House (Detail Elevation): Designed to house an international digital effects house (e.g. Industrial Light and Magic, Digital Domain), this building was situated toward the peninsula of the previous Tank Farm Master Plan.

The design was divided into two areas: one for the creative, workstation space; and the other for the administration spaces. The creative space was a single volume with an undulating platform, with mobile workstations to allow greatest flexibility. The administration spaces were fixed rooms, more in keeping with traditional office spaces.

Auckland Performing Arts Centre (Ground Floor Plan): Students selected their own site and determined their own brief.  This is a performing arts centre to properly complete Aotea Square, nestled between the existing Town Hall & Aotea Convention Centre, and opposite the IMAX theatre.

This was completed in the classical style. Pedestrian connections were made to all sides of the forecourt, and internal connections between the existing Town Hall, new Performing Arts Centre, and existing Convention Centre.

The design was featured in Unitec's student yearbook.
